Description

Azosyn 500mg Tablet contains the active ingredients Piperacillin and Tazobactam, a powerful antibiotic duo used to treat moderate to severe bacterial infections. Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin-class antibiotic, and Tazobactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor that protects Piperacillin from degradation by resistant bacteria.

Indications / Therapeutic Use:

• Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., hospital-acquired pneumonia)

• Urinary tract infections

• Intra-abdominal infections (e.g., appendicitis, peritonitis)

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Gynecologic infections

• Bacteremia and septicemia

Composition:

• Piperacillin – 500 mg

• Tazobactam – (strength varies, often in a 8:1 ratio with Piperacillin)

• Dosage form: Tablet (if confirmed)

• Route: Oral (if available), though traditionally IV

Mechanism of Action:

• Piperacillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death

• Tazobactam inhibits β-lactamase enzymes that would otherwise destroy Piperacillin

This combination enhances effectiveness against resistant bacteria, including many Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens.

Side Effects:

• Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting

• Skin rash or allergic reactions

• Abdominal pain

• Elevated liver enzymes

• Electrolyte imbalances (especially with IV form)

Precautions:

• Not recommended in patients with penicillin allergy

• Use cautiously in renal impairment

• Monitor liver and kidney function with prolonged use

• Not advisable during pregnancy unless clearly needed

• Avoid live vaccines during antibiotic treatment
