Description

Composition:

• Artesunate: 500 mg per vial

Mechanism of Action:

• Artesunate is a water-soluble derivative of artemisinin, a compound derived from the plant Artemisia annua. It is effective in killing malaria parasites by interfering with their ability to break down and use hemoglobin. The drug rapidly reduces the number of parasites in the bloodstream.

Indications:

• Severe malaria (particularly in cases where oral treatments are not effective or possible)

• Treatment of Plasmodium falciparum malaria, especially in resistant strains

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults and Children (≥ 5 kg): The standard dose is 2.4 mg/kg body weight on the first day (at 0, 12, and 24 hours) followed by 2.4 mg/kg once daily until clinical improvement.

• Route of Administration: Given intravenously, typically in a hospital setting, for fast and effective action.

Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:

• Fever

• Nausea and vomiting

• Dizziness

• Low blood pressure (hypotension)

• Allergic reactions

Serious side effects are rare but may include:

• Hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells)

• QT interval prolongation (a type of heart arrhythmia)

Precautions:

• Allergy: Avoid use if allergic to Artesunate or other artemisinin derivatives.

• Pregnancy: Artesunate is generally considered safe during pregnancy, especially in severe cases of malaria, but it should only be used under medical supervision.

• Liver/Kidney Function: Patients with liver or kidney disease may need dose adjustments or extra monitoring.
