  • Uses: Primarily used for managing hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure, and for cardiovascular protection in individuals who have had a heart attack.

Description

Amace (Ramipril) is an ACE inhibitor that is prescribed to treat several cardiovascular conditions. It works by blocking the enzyme angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which normally produces angiotensin II, a chemical that narrows blood vessels. By blocking this enzyme, Ramipril helps dilate blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and making it easier for the heart to pump blood.

Common Uses:

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Amace helps to lower blood pressure, which reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems.

  • Heart Failure: It is used to improve symptoms and increase survival rates in people with heart failure.

  • Post-Heart Attack: After a heart attack, Amace helps reduce the risk of further cardiovascular events.

  • Chronic Kidney Disease: It can also be prescribed to protect the kidneys in conditions like diabetic nephropathy.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Hypertension: The typical starting dose is 2.5 mg once a day, which can be increased to 10 mg daily, depending on the individual’s response.

  • Heart Failure: The usual starting dose is 1.25 mg to 2.5 mg once a day, with potential increases.

  • Post-Heart Attack: Usually 5 mg once daily, but the dose may vary based on individual circumstances.

Take Amace with or without food, at the same time each day, to help remember. Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Common Side Effects:

  • Cough (a known side effect of ACE inhibitors)

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly (common when first starting the medication)

  • Fatigue

  • Elevated blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia)

  • Low blood pressure (hypotension), especially if you’re dehydrated or taking diuretics.

  • Rash or mild allergic reactions

  • Swelling of the face or lips (rare, may indicate a serious allergic reaction known as angioedema)

Precautions:

  1. Kidney Function: Amace can affect kidney function, so kidney function tests should be monitored.

  2. Pregnancy: Ramipril is not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, as it can harm the fetus.

  3. Low Blood Pressure: Amace can lower blood pressure, so it should be used with caution in individuals who are already on medications for blood pressure or are dehydrated.

  4. Hyperkalemia: Use caution if you’re on potassium supplements or salt substitutes, as Ramipril can raise potassium levels in the blood.
