Description

Composition:

• Amlodipine – 5 mg per tablet

Mechanism of Action:

• Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that works by inhibiting the flow of calcium ions into the smooth muscle cells of the heart and blood vessels. This relaxation of the vascular smooth muscle helps lower blood pressure and reduces the heart’s workload. It also dilates the coronary arteries, increasing blood flow to the heart, which helps in preventing chest pain (angina).

Indications:

• Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Amlodipine is used to reduce elevated blood pressure, helping prevent complications like stroke, heart failure, and kidney damage.

• Angina (Chest Pain): Amlodipine helps to relieve chest pain caused by insufficient oxygen supply to the heart muscle by improving blood flow to the heart.

• Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): For patients with CAD, Amlodipine can help manage symptoms and reduce the frequency of angina attacks.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults: The usual starting dose for treating high blood pressure or angina is 5 mg once daily, which can be increased to a maximum dose of 10 mg per day based on the patient’s response and tolerability.

• Children: The use of Amlodipine in children should be prescribed by a healthcare provider, and the dosage will depend on the child’s weight and condition.

• Administration: It is usually taken once daily, with or without food. It is important to take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels.

Side Effects:

• Common side effects may include:

  • Swelling (edema) of the legs or ankles

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Flushing (feeling warm)

  • Fatigue

• Rare but serious side effects include:

  • Severe chest pain

  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)

  • Shortness of breath

  • Severe dizziness or fainting

Precautions:

• Liver Disease: People with liver problems may need to take a lower dose or require special monitoring.

• Heart Conditions: People with certain heart conditions, like severe aortic stenosis or heart failure, should use Amlodipine with caution.
