Description

Mechanism of Action:
Oxazepam binds to GABA receptors in the brain, amplifying GABA’s inhibitory effects. This results in reduced neuronal excitability, producing anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing), sedative, and muscle-relaxant effects.

Dosage and Administration:

• Dosage: Typically prescribed at 10 mg to 15 mg, taken 2 to 3 times daily, depending on the severity of the condition.

• Administration: Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew.

• Food Intake: Can be taken with or without food.

Common Side Effects:

• Drowsiness or sedation

• Dizziness or lightheadedness

• Headache

• Memory impairment or forgetfulness

• Impaired coordination

• Irritability

• Nausea or constipation

• Blurred vision

• Fatigue or tiredness

• Dry mouth

• Loss of appetite

• Confusion or disorientation

• Increased sex drive (in some cases)

• Erectile dysfunction (in some cases)

Precautions and Warnings:

• Pregnancy: Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risks to the fetus.

• Breastfeeding: Avoid use while breastfeeding as Oxazepam can pass into breast milk.

• Elderly: Use with caution in older adults due to increased sensitivity to side effects.

• Liver/Kidney Impairment: Dose adjustments may be necessary for individuals with liver or kidney conditions.

• Drug Interactions: May interact with other CNS depressants, antifungals, antibiotics, and certain antidepressants.

• Alcohol: Concurrent use with alcohol can enhance sedative effects and is not recommended.

• Dependence: Prolonged use can lead to physical and psychological dependence.
