Description

Composition:

• Atenolol (50 mg)

Therapeutic Uses:

• Hypertension: Lowers high blood pressure.

• Angina Pectoris: Reduces chest pain.

• Arrhythmias: Controls irregular heartbeats.

• Post-Myocardial Infarction: Reduces the risk of heart attacks.

Mechanism of Action:
Atenolol works by blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart, leading to a decrease in heart rate and contractility, thereby reducing blood pressure and the heart’s oxygen demand .

Dosage and Administration:

• Dosage: Typically, 50 mg once daily, or as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

• Administration: Take with or without food, at the same time each day.

• Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Fatigue

  • Cold hands or feet

  • Nausea or diarrhea

• Serious:

  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia)

  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)

  • Shortness of breath

  • Swelling of the ankles or feet

Precautions:

• Contraindications:

  • Severe bradycardia

  • Heart block greater than first degree

  • Cardiogenic shock

• Cautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with asthma, diabetes, or kidney disease.

  • Monitor blood pressure regularly during treatment.

  • Avoid sudden discontinuation of the medication without consulting your doctor.

Drug Interactions:

• Increased Effects:

  • Other antihypertensive agents

  • Calcium channel blockers

• Decreased Effects:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

• Potentially Dangerous Interactions:

  • Digoxin

  • Clonidine

  • Insulin or oral antidiabetic medications
