Description

Composition:

• Albendazole 200 mg per 10 ml suspension.

Mechanism of Action:
Albendazole disrupts the polymerization of tubulin in parasitic cells, impairing their ability to absorb glucose. This depletion of energy reserves leads to the death of the parasites.

Indications:
Bendex 200 mg Suspension is prescribed for:

• Intestinal worm infections (e.g., roundworm, hookworm, pinworm, threadworm).

• Neurocysticercosis (brain infection caused by pork tapeworm).

• Hydatid disease (cystic echinococcosis).

• Giardiasis (intestinal infection).

• Filariasis (lymphatic system infection).

• Schistosomiasis (blood fluke infection).

• Amoebiasis (intestinal and hepatic).

• Periodontitis (gum infection).

• Liver abscesses.

• Diarrhea caused by parasitic infections.

Dosage and Administration:

• Administer orally, preferably with a fat-containing food like milk to enhance absorption.

• Shake the bottle well before use.

• The dosage and duration depend on the specific infection and the child’s weight.

• If vomiting occurs within 30 minutes of administration, repeat the same dose.

• For certain infections, a single dose may suffice, while others might require a longer treatment period.

Side Effects:
Common side effects include:

• Nausea and vomiting.

• Dizziness and headache.

• Abdominal pain.

• Loss of appetite.

• Hair loss.

• Mild fever.

• Sore throat.

Serious side effects are rare but may include:

• Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling).

• Elevated liver enzymes.

• Bone marrow suppression (manifested as unusual bruising or bleeding).

• Seizures (especially in neurocysticercosis treatment).

• Signs of infection (fever, sore throat).

Precautions:

• Not recommended for children under 2 years of age due to safety concerns.

• Use with caution in individuals with liver or kidney disorders.

• Monitor liver function tests during prolonged therapy.

• Consult a doctor before use if the child has a history of seizures, blood disorders, or is pregnant or breastfeeding.

• Avoid grapefruit juice during treatment, as it may increase drug concentration.
