Description

Composition:

• Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate 400 mg

Therapeutic Uses:

• Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Helps reduce joint inflammation and pain.

• Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): Alleviates symptoms like skin rashes and fatigue.

• Malaria: Prevents and treats malaria by targeting the parasites responsible for the infection.

• Type 2 Diabetes (Off-label): May improve glycemic control by enhancing insulin sensitivity.

Mechanism of Action:

Hydroxychloroquine modulates the immune response by reducing inflammation and altering the communication of immune cells. In malaria, it interferes with the growth of parasites in red blood cells. In type 2 diabetes, it may enhance insulin sensitivity.

Dosage and Administration:

• Rheumatoid Arthritis: Initial dose of 400–600 mg daily; maintenance dose of 200–400 mg daily.

• Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: 200–400 mg daily.

• Malaria Prophylaxis: 400 mg once weekly.

• Malaria Treatment: 800 mg initially, followed by 400 mg at 6, 24, and 48 hours.

• Administration: Take with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain.

• Headache, dizziness, loss of appetite.

• Skin rashes, mood swings.

• Visual disturbances; regular eye examinations are recommended.

Precautions:

• Eye Health: Regular ophthalmologic check-ups are advised due to potential retinal toxicity.

• Kidney and Liver Function: Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.

• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare provider before use.
